Gentle Giant - a big beautiful heavily-feathered #bronze #clydesdale

It is so lovely to enjoy this beautiful big #fellow in the studio for a few days to photograph him and felt his hooves before he heads to @hambletongalleries

This piece has not been cast for quite a few years. He was originally commissioned by a lovely collector and I did a very small edition of 7 for the sculpture.

I had actually forgotten how large he was and took some pictures of myself with him to show his scale.

Gentle Giant, Clydesdale. This big fellow has not been cast for a while. Very excited to see him again 🐎 this guy is one of my bigger bronzes standing 19 inches tall. He will be heading to @hambletongalleries when the patina is finished, final polish and new photographs 🤎

Not much longer now…. I have been immersed in long, quiet hours in the studio—building armatures, adding clay and the nuances of motion to bring the spirit of these beauties through into this body of work. Now, in this final stretch, it is about creating the surface texture and final details of this lovely collection of African Wildlife Sculptures. Pre-casting release will be August 10th!

Leopards have such a beautiful grace that I don’t think is rivaled by any other big cat. Although I have painted many leopards, this is the first one I have sculpted, and I am really looking forward to see it cast into bronze as part of the Bushveld Collection. Pre-casting release for the sculptures will be in early August.

The practice of sculpting—well of any creating really—but especially sculpting, is a meditation. Losing my sense of time and place while sinking completely into the process is so satisfying. It is a velvety, beautiful space that fills me with energy and well being. This beautiful Fox Knocker was recently cast and sent to the UK. His head lifts up from the back plate to create the knock. This is the only fox sculpture I have ever done and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

In the sculpting process there is a moment when a piece starts to capture the essence of a subject. That is when magic happens!

There is always still a lot to do at this stage, and ultimately the sculptures always demand further refinement from me. Yet it can also be bittersweet to see those first loose and gestural shapes disappear. The trick is to strike a balance between the two.

I just received this beautiful email from a commission client who invited me to share it. It means so much to me to hear from collectors who have been moved in such positive ways by the work.

“Hello Kindrie,
I want to express my gratitude for the outstanding job you did in transforming my horse, Key West, from photos and sketches to a beautiful bronze. When I look at it, the bronze is unmistakably Wes. His face, his expression, and that little hint of a star on his forehead — you really captured him exactly.

I really appreciate the time that you took with me to review Wes as a sketch, and then in clay, and then again once he was ready to go to the foundry. It was a wonderful project, and the process really helped me in dealing with losing Wes.

Wes was dedicated on February 1, 2025, as a perpetual memorial trophy for the New Jersey Horse Shows Association. Once a year, Wes will come out to be presented to the High Point Open Hunter. The rest of the year, he will grace my mantlepiece, in memory of a very special horse.

The sculpture sets will be unique in that they will be available separately or can be assembled into a larger montage of two or three separate pieces that can be slid together and potentially rearranged when desired.

One side of Pegasus is barded in armour, without a wing, held tightly by bridle and tack, the other side has been released to soar freely. The sword and shield represent the courage to move toward that freedom.

It is so gratifying when collectors also connect with my favourite works enough to want to enjoy them in their own spaces.

2024 has been a year of shifting for me… into a new stage in my career and life’s journey, and becoming more comfortable and confident in my role as an artist and author. There were some hard times, but also much to celebrate and enjoy.

2024 has been a year of shifting for me… into a new stage in my career and life’s journey, and becoming more comfortable and confident in my role as an artist and author. There were some hard times, but also much to celebrate and enjoy.

The final days of this year's Holiday Shop...

I had sooo much fun creating this festive shop again this year, and very much enjoyed sharing it with you all.

Of the 24 Mini Cat sculptures I initially cast, there are only 6 left! This makes the editions for the three cats close to half sold out.

Pegasus Becoming Free is a profound personal piece for me.

I have neglected this lovely fellow and his stone unicorn companion lately. This painting is currently in my storage and I look forward to getting him out to give him some attention. A new set of photos and a check up.

As paintings move through the world, shipped back and forth from studio to exhibition and back again, they are often subjected to bumps and scuffs and worse, heaven forbid!

I have been told that I over-pack my artwork for its voyages, but I would rather err on the side of caution than have a painting return with a hole pierced through the canvas, or a frame that’s been demolished and has to be redone. Bronze is much more durable, but hummingbird bills and sometimes critter ears can break off or bend. Thankfully, if a bronze piece does get damaged during shipping, it can be taken to the foundry to be repaired.

As my sculpture photography continues to improve with new cameras and more skill, it offers an opportunity to take new better quality pictures before work heads out to collectors.

The process of patination on bronze sculpture is not paint that is applied, but a reaction where certain chemicals are brushed or sprayed on while the bronze is hot to alter the surface molecules of the bronze.

The water you see being poured on allows us to see how dark the colour will be once the final protective wax is put on the sculpture. Some patinas, like Cubric (green) can darken significantly, making the outcome somewhat difficult to control. This sequence shows the raw bronze through to the final polished sculpture.

Always, though, it is an absolute delight to see sculptures under-go the patina process!
